Support for the Smithsonian Castle bell
The 821-lb. bronze bell that chimes from the top of the clock tower rests on recycled plastic beams manufactured by Plastic Recycling of Iowa Falls.
"I must report on the effectiveness of this recycled lumber, both as a leveling material and as a vibration-dampining media. The lumber varies in thickness from 3/4" to 3-1/2" to give the bell a flat footing on the domed roof."
